Drop the Pop Funding
Use the funding to conduct any number of programs and events/activities that highlight the importance of healthy drinks, foods, etc. Some examples include:
- The promotion of healthy foods or healthy food days/weeks, using a variety of local and/or store bought foods.
- Learning how to make healthy drinks, snacks or meals.
- Cooking (traditional or a combination of traditional and store foods) with elders and other experts from the community.
- Working with your regional dietitian and/or nutritionist to support nutrition awareness and education (for more information, contact Faye Seymour, President, Northern Nutrition Association, at 867-920-4749).
- Events that support school health, the nutrition curriculum, science or other studies.
- Learning how to cook new, healthy foods from other cultures.
- Discussing issues related to marketing of unhealthy foods and how advertising influences the amount of sugary beverages (including energy drinks) consumed in a week or a month. Are there champions in your community or region who are trying to make a difference? Consider doing a video about them!
- Working with local champions, such as the Weledeh Nutrition Ambassadors.
School-Community Outreach Project Funding **NEW**
For this year only, Drop the Pop has funding so that schools can do school-community outreach projects to “Spread the Word” about Drop the Pop beyond the school itself. Schools are encouraged to work with their communities to spread the word. Some examples of activities that are eligible include:
- Holding a community-wide event, such as a Health or Nutrition Fair, to ‘spread the word’ about healthy eating.
- Working with your community Band or Hamlet to promote healthy eating, such as community leaders, elders, or store managers.
- Work with your Community Health Representative, Recreation Coordinator or Regional Nutritionist, to run community wide events that promote healthy eating and healthy activities (e.g. cultural activities such as a drum dance, cook-out, feast, traditional games; sports and nutrition activities, activities such as volleyball tournaments, etc.).
- Hosting a community-wide recipe cook-off or recipe contest; challenging community leaders, teachers or parents to “drop the pop” or prepare their best recipe (this could also be videoed!).
Under 100 Club Funding
The Under 100 Club is a funding program for small schools (under 100 students) to promote physical activities appropriate for the school. Promoting physical activity along with healthy eating habits has positive effects on both physical and mental well-being.
What kinds of activities are eligible?
- Funding could be used for programs involving attendance at events that improve physical health, or hiring facilitators to provide training or support for active living events.
- Funding could be used for small types of equipment that must be kept at the school for use by all students (indoor or outdoor, such as loaner skates, skies, snowshoes, heavy clothing, basketball nets, classroom activities, etc).
- Based on the evaluation of last year’s pilot, it was recommended that a range of partners should be included in any project and event. Identify 3 – 5 partners in your project description.
- Describe how the project can lead to more sustained activities that promote active living for students who may not normally be active.
