The 7th Annual (2012) Drop the Pop NWT Awards
What are the 2012 Drop the Pop NWT Awards?
This year, the 2012 Drop the Pop NWT Awards will be provided to schools, teachers, students, and/or with any partners that submit Drop the Pop Videos (maximum 5 minutes in length) that support healthy eating for schools, classrooms, groups or organizations or communities.
The new awards this year will acknowledge those who submit videos that depict healthy eating at school, in homes, in the community or just about anywhere. The content of the video can be educational, promotional (such as Public Service Announcements), cultural, designed to make a point about sugary beverages, and/or health related in some way.
We will post the best videos on YouTube (as such, any submission will need consent forms from anyone who is in the video). We are looking for videos that have or can help make healthy changes in classrooms, schools, communities, neighbourhoods, or those that describe challenges people have about healthy eating in a community.
Application Guidelines:
- Your video should be no longer than 5 minutes. We will only be able to use up to 5 minute segments of any video submitted. The video content can be on any topic you choose and should cover any area of interest to your school, community, or the NWT in general.
- The video can be submitted in one or more languages.
- One example could be a Public Service Announcement that can be aired on YouTube or potentially on television or on school closed-circuit TV.
- Another example could be a story about an individual, group, students, teachers or community leaders who do something unique to support Drop the Pop or healthy eating, or who has created a healthy school environment.
- Video anything or anyone (teachers, volunteers, parents, schools, classroom, local leaders, students, children, etc) who brings about positive change with respect to healthy eating in their own way (this could also be linked to related projects or events, such as being active or improving the environment through gardening projects, recycling, cooking, preserving traditional foods, classroom events, etc).
- The best videos will be reviewed by a group of judges, chosen from among
the list of partners. Awards are monetary and will go to the participating
school. Award categories are based on school enrollment. To be
eligible, all applications/reports/surveys etc. have to be submitted on or
before
March 26, 2012. All video submissions are to be sent to healthpromotion@gov.nt.ca There will be:
-
Three awards of $1,500.00 for schools with a small population size (100 and under).
-
Three awards of $2,000.00 for schools with a medium sized population (101 – 200).
-
Three awards of $2,500.00 for schools with a large population size (201 and over).
-
Drop the Pop NWT Awards will recognize schools that support healthy eating for students.
Why Videos and Awards?
- This year, the theme is Drop the Pop – Spread the Word. The awards link with the theme of getting messages out there about healthy eating, dropping the pop, sugary beverages, good dental health, etc.
- The awards will recognize collaborative, innovative efforts of people that champion or make meaningful changes in healthy eating and improve the lives of others in the process.
- Awards encourage and celebrate healthy eating for children and youth (for example, promoting healthy cooking programs for kids), which are so needed in our communities.
- Awards increase awareness about promising/better practices or successful activities that we can share on our website and potentially with the media about healthy schools.
- Effectively addressing problems calls for sustained efforts by the public, the private sector, by health professional and by non-government sectors.
How to apply for an Award:
- Submit your video/activity report, highlighting your Drop the Pop Campaign activities. If you are not submitting a video, we will still need your activity, financial and evaluation reports.
- To be eligible for the video awards, submit applications no later than March 26, 2012.
- Indicate what you plan to do with the award money if your school wins (this information forms part of your final activity report). The award money needs to be used to support healthy living in your school.
- As mentioned, your video will be reviewed by our partners. To be eligible for an award, submit consent forms for everyone in your video.
-
The awards will be based on:
-
Innovation and creativity.
- Degree to which the person/team/group videoed has helped to improve healthy eating in your school or community over time;
- Collaboration with partners to create change or improvements or degree of participation by others (e.g. range of partners, number of students or community partners).
