Senior Home Heating Subsidy
The Senior Home Heating Subsidy provides seniors with fuel, electricity or wood to heat their homes.
For seniors who:

are 60 years old or older
-
own and live in their own home
-
are not getting income assistance
-
have a low household income and meet an income test
-
are residents of the NWT
-
apply once every year between September 1 and March 31
The amount of benefits a senior can receive depends on the community in which a senior lives, the type of home heating required and the net household income level. For example, in Yellowknife a household can get up to 5 cords of wood, 2400 litres of fuel oil, 3,200 litres of propane, 6,000 kilowatt hours of electricity or 90 gigajoules of natural gas.

Application forms are available from the Department of Education, Culture and Employment Office, Canada/NWT Service Centre, Area Office nearest you or on their website at www.ece.gov.nt.ca.
When you apply, you must include with your application:

Something that shows how old you are, like a birth certificate or driver's licence.

Something that shows what your total household income is, like income tax returns or pay stubs.

Something that proves that you own your home, like a title, deed or mortgage document.
| Note: | Applicants who believe they have been denied benefits or are eligible for a benefit that is higher than the one calculated can appeal through the formal appeal process. Appeals must be made within 7 days of receiving a denial letter. |
