Seniors Citizens’ Week: September 20th – 26th, 2009
“Youth and Seniors Learning Together”
Senior Citizens’ Week is an
opportunity to recognize and celebrate seniors and elders across the Northwest
Territories. Beginning on Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 20th, communities
across the Northwest Territories are encouraged to organize events or activities
in recognition of this special week.
The history of the Northwest Territories is the story of our seniors and elders…their work, their families, their dreams and their commitment. While it is important to remember and appreciate past accomplishments, the week is also an opportunity to recognize the ongoing contributions of seniors and elders. Today’s Seniors and Elders continue to contribute to our communities in many ways such as through their volunteer work and their active involvement with their families.
Seniors and elders also contribute through teaching and sharing their knowledge with young people in schools, during community activities and in family life. Our seniors and elders willingly pass on traditional skills and knowledge to our youth, thereby building and strengthening our youth’s sense of history and culture. However, today’s seniors also learn from our youth, such as about the world of technology in which many youth are so comfortable. In recognition of this special relationship and how youth and seniors can learn from each other, the theme for Senior Citizen’s Week this year is “Youth and Seniors Learning Together”.
