Community Based Initiatives

Promotion and prevention programs and services are provided at the community level through health centres and public health units as well as non-government organizations.

Community Health Representatives plan and coordinate health promotion activities within the community in partnership with other health and social services professionals and community groups. These activities promote healthy environments and personal lifestyle choices. It is well-recognized that community residents effectively identify issues and collaborate to improve well-being through the health promotion community development process.

As part of the an on-going commitment to community-based health promotion initiatives, the Department works with regional and community partners through a fund called the Health Promotion Strategy Fund.

This funding assists communities working on tobacco harm reduction and cessation, active living, healthy pregnancies and injury prevention.
