Medical Travel

If you are referred away from your home community by your physician, dentist, or community health nurse for treatment, the Department of Health and Social Services will provide assistance to the nearest centre in Canada where treatment is available.  The treatment required must be an insured service related to your disease condition covered by Medicare or Extended Health Benefits.  To qualify for transportation benefits, you must:

  • require treatment that is not available in your home community
  • have a medical referral to the nearest centre that offers the treatment you require

Note:  Medical travel which originates outside the NWT Boundaries does not qualify for benefits.

Upon completion of eligible travel, submit a claim form along with receipts for all medical travel expenses, proof of attendance (attending physician's signature) and your medical referral to the Health Services Administration Office for reimbursement.  

Medical Travel Rates are subject to change. Prior to traveling, contact the Department of Health and Social Services to verify the current daily rates for meals, accommodations and transportations to and from appointments. Rates as of October 1, 2005 are as follows:
