Eyeglasses

You are eligible for one pair of eyeglasses every two years.  Benefits include:

  • the cost of frames up to the maximum as defined in the contract with NWT optical companies
  • the cost of standard lenses as defined in the contract with NWT optical companies

Contact the Department of Health and Social Services to obtain current contract rates.  Also, you are encouraged to ask the opticians what the covered amount is and what you will be responsible for.  Seniors with group insurance for glasses do not receive any further coverage unless it is below the covered amount.  Persons who are financially burdened by this cost may contact us for more information on indigent health benefits.

Replacement lenses are covered more frequently than every 2 years for worsening vision as needed.

Special features such as tinting or sunglasses are benefits if prescribed and required because of a medical condition.  An Ophthalmologist must provide written notification of your condition and you or the supplier must contact the Department of Health and Social Services for approval prior to purchasing.

If special features are not required for a medical condition, they may be purchased at your own expense.
