Benefit Types


Intercommunity Transportation

Intercommunity transportation benefits cover:

  • scheduled or charter aircraft
  • bus or taxi fare between communities
  • ground ambulance when required to transport an inpatient from one health facility to another
  • private vehicle

Escorts

Escort benefits cover:

  1. Medical - normally a doctor or nurse required to provide professional care to the patient while travelling.
  2. Non-Medical - an adult authorized to accompany a patient who is unable to travel without assistance or who is authorized to stay for part or all of the medical treatment.
Note: Non-Medical escorts must meet the following criteria.  The patient:
  • is under the age of 19;
  • is an infant who is being breast fed by the mother who is the non-medical escort;
  • has a mental or physical handicap of a nature that he/she is not able to travel unassisted;
  • requires an escort for interpretation during the travel; or
  • the attending physician at the treatment facility provides a written request for a non-medical escort to participate in a treatment program in order to learn how to care for the patient following discharge.

Patient and Escort Boarding

Eligible patients and non-medical escorts are entitled to stay at the Boarding Homes.  If the patient or escort decides against staying at the Boarding Home, a daily allowance of $50 is provided for accommodation and $18 for meals.


Local Transportation

Local transportation is provided to eligible patients from the:

  • place of referral or residence to airport;
  • airport to place of treatment or accommodation;
  • accommodation to the place of treatment and return;
  • place of treatment or accommodation to the airport; and
  • airport to place of residence in community of origin.
