Recent initiatives and key events supported by the Department
For 2009:
- Information on FASD is disseminated approximately once per week to more than
250 members in the NWT via a FASD electronic distribution list
- FASD Videoconference Series is broadcast in most communities in the NWT.
DVD’s of former videoconferences are made available in each NWT Health Authority
- Participation in Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Partnership (CNFASDP)
- FASD Symposium, “Opening Doors, Hearts and Minds” is attended by 150
professionals, front-line workers, persons affected by FASD and their caregivers
in Yellowknife on November 24 and 25, 2009
- Three training items: “This Is Me: A Tool For Learning About and Working
with People Who have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder”, “Strategies for Parenting
Children with FASD” and “Living and Learning with FASD: Jilly’s Story” are
distributed to NWT schools
- A FASD Diagnostic Services Team is formed and trained as part of the Child
Development Team of the Stanton Territorial Hospital. Clinical diagnosis follows
the Canadian guidelines for diagnosis for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder as set
out in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Retrieve journal article from

- More than 50 physicians, nursing practitioners, nurses, other medical
professionals and front-line workers receive training at one of two one-day
workshops: “Pregnancy Related Issues in the Management of Addictions (PRIMA)”
- Peer Support Group at Yellowknife Association for Community Living in
Yellowknife
- Parent Support Program at Yellowknife Association for Community Living in
Yellowknife
- Language Enhancement Program at Chief T’Selehye in Fort Good Hope
For 2008:
- Territorial Community Consultations for the “FASD Framework and Action Plan”
- Participation in Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

- Regulating the behaviour of youth affected by FASD by the John Howard
Society in Yellowknife with a Judo program

- Fast Forward Intervention Program at K’alemi Dene School in N’Dilo
