Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a term to describe a range of disabilities that may affect an individual who was exposed to alcohol before birth. FASD is the leading cause of developmental delay in Canadian children. FASD is of concern in the NWT as children who are exposed to alcohol prenatally may experience life long challenges that impact self reliance. Drug and alcohol use has become a public health concern in the NWT.

FASD is a lifelong disability. Early diagnosis, supportive environments and a range of special supports and services assist individuals and their families in improving outcomes and maximizing the potential of affected individuals.
