Tetanus
Tetanus, or lockjaw, is caused by bacteria found in soil, dust and manure. If the bacteria infects a cut, it can produce poison that causes a severe muscle spasm that can lead to death. Even with modern medicine, six out of every ten people who get tetanus die.
Effective protection from tetanus requires that adults receive a vaccine every 10 years.
