Poliomyelitis
Poliomyelitis (polio) is caused by a virus so it cannot be treated once it occurs. One person in 100 infected with polio virus will develop paralysis, which may be permanent and very crippling. Before the development of the vaccine, there were thousands of cases of paralysis and hundreds of deaths from polio each year in Canada.
