Meningococcal Disease

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. It can result in two rare, but serious diseases:

• meningococcal meningitis is an infection of the covering which lines the brain and spinal cord; and

• meningococcemia is a more severe infection involving the blood and many parts of the body.
