Diphtheria
Diphtheria is caused by bacteria that can infect the nose and throat, and prevent proper breathing. It can also cause skin or ear infections. The bacteria also produces a toxin (a poisonous substance) that can cause paralysis or heart damage. About one person in every ten who gets diphtheria dies.
