Escherichia coli
Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 is a bacteria that can cause diarrheal illness. This can occur from eating contaminated food, which can include:
- improperly cooked or raw ground beef;
- unpasteurized apple juice/cider;
- raw fruits and vegetables;
- salami;
- milk products; and
- unpasteurized milk.
Infection can also occur from person-to-person contact and swimming in or drinking contaminated water.
You can prevent E. coli O157:H7 infection by thoroughly cooking ground beef, washing all raw fruits and vegetables, avoiding unpasteurized milk, and washing your hands carefully.
