Help is Out There!
NWT Addictions Awareness Week - November 13-19, 2011
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has decided to change the name from National Addictions Awareness Week to NWT Addictions Awareness Week to continue to be observed annually on the third week of November.
This change was made as the national week is no longer called the National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW). In 2008, the Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA) took over NAAW planning from Alberta’s Nechi Institute which had hosted NAAW since the late 1980’s . In 2008, the title of the week was changed to National Aboriginal Addictions Awareness Week (NAAAW) to align with their vision of empowering and building capacity within Aboriginal communities and organizations.
Across Canada, many provinces have developed their own awareness campaigns over the years during or around this week. For example, in Ontario, Drug Awareness Week is observed and this was officially recognized as National Drug Awareness Week in 1987.
The GNWT has decided to target all populations – both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people – as well as all addictions, including substances and process addictions such as gambling.
NWT Addictions Awareness Week is an opportunity to draw attention to the important issue of addictions while highlighting the services that are available. By working together, we can raise awareness and understanding around addictions and make it easier for people to reach out for help.
