Midwifery

The Midwifery Profession Act came into force in early 2005.  Midwifery is a regulated, autonomous health profession. Registered midwives will practice in accordance with the standards that are consistent with the national Canadian midwifery practice standards.

Registered Midwives are health care professionals and are experts in normal childbirth. Registered midwives who trained in Canada have taken a four-year degree: Bachelor of Health Sciences (Midwifery) or equivalency. Registered Midwives who trained in other countries and have similar training, must have their education and experience addressed through a formal process by one of the Canadian Colleges of Midwifery to be registered in Canada. Midwives are also certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and neonatal resuscitation including endotracheal intubation.
